A Framework for Translating and Reconstructing Regional Textile Cultural Elements in Interior Environmental Design

Abstract
Regional textile culture contains visual, structural, and symbolic features that can inform contemporary interior environmental design. However, such elements are often used through superficial decorative borrowing, which weakens cultural depth and spatial coherence. To address this issue, this study proposes a structured framework for translating and reconstructing regional textile cultural elements in interior design. The framework includes four stages: cultural element decomposition, feature-based translation, spatial reconstruction, and multi-criteria evaluation. A case study based on traditional Chinese embroidery was conducted to test the framework. Textile samples were analyzed from visual, structural, and semantic perspectives and translated into spatial components through predefined mapping rules. The resulting design schemes were evaluated using an AHP- and fuzzy-based weighted method. The results show that the framework improves overall design performance, with significant improvements in cultural expression and spatial coherence, while improvements in aesthetic quality and functional performance remain comparatively moderate. Sensitivity analysis further confirms the relative stability of the evaluation results. Overall, the study provides a structured methodological basis for integrating regional textile culture into contemporary interior environmental design.
